Sir Casey Expounds

One day when the Kitty Club Med left the Cat Colony Zone, walking single file, I followed them, hiding behind trees, under bushes, scurrying to catch up. I squeezed under the link fence, waiting till they crossed the street and walked up the sidewalk. Still single file, and obviously the Leader, the Black & White with the distinctive Penguin Pattern Colors, from the white around his mouth, continuing down to his underbelly, with white toes, marched forward, not looking to his left or right.

Like their outdoor escapades, always together, sharing the same space, with distance to separate egos - except for BFF Jakita and Calico Gen - I (Casey) had not made it to Momma's bed yet (Andy top left, Beau, bottom right).
See BFF Jakita and Calico Gen – I (Casey) had not made it to Momma’s bed yet (Andy top left, Beau, bottom right).

Next in line was the Calico Kitty, so delightful with a tail ringed in hues from ginger, to black to white with the tip a dark charcoal. No wonder she was such a Diva.  Following Calico Kitty (her brothers ran surveillance, protecting her at all costs), was the biggest and the blackest of the Black and Whites.  It almost seemed like his dark green eyes blended into his fur so you could not tell where his eyes ended and the fur began.  Every once in a while  he would stare behind like he sensed, even if he did not see me as I crept surreptitiously behind, using tree trunks and bushes, as camouflage.

When I saw the three cats turn into a gate of a little brick house with a detached garage that had seen better days, I hid under the umbrella mulberry bush, where the long flowing branches covered in green leaves, protected me from all prying eyes.  Like who is kidding who? The three of them paraded over to the tree, looked under, the biggest Black & White (aka Beau Cat) gave a low snarl, like this is private property, get off. Then, tails in air,  they turned in tandem to go find their favourite perches till Momma bid them to come inside.

Here I am, no scars, clean eyes, my fur no longer patchy. I am a fine looking fellow.

From my vantage point, I could see all.  It was like ShangriLa to me.  There were huge flower beds, with bushes and flowers to hide under. The front yard had been ripped out and a rainbow of flowers had been planted, with stepping-stones so you could sit and help Momma weed.  The huge granite stone porch at the front of the house was made for a kitty to lie down and soak up the sun. What was the most amazing thing for a kitty to understand was this huge flower bed surrounded in different stones from colored pebbles to river rocks to pink and red crushed brick which surrounded squares of shiny white dolomite on which tiny crystals were flung at random – you needed sun glasses to look at it.

Dad's last piece of Art for the minimalist naturalist - pebbles, red crushed brick, river rock and white dolomite that was sprinkled with glittering penny size crystal quartz. Maybe, designed by Momma, but hard labor, Daddy .
Dad’s last piece of Art for the minimalist naturalist –  designed by Momma,  but  the hard labor, all Daddy.

Now I came from a Cat Colony (but my Baby Daddy didn’t, my Baby Mama told me) and I met up with lots of rocks and stones but not micro managed to perfection. Surely it must have been arranged by the Garden Angels my Baby Mama had told us about the night we were all trembling, as the big thunderstorm broke limbs from the trees and the lighting temporarily blinded us.  Living in a place like this would be Paradise! Whoa! No wonder those three Hoity Cats had Cat-a-Tude.

To the side of the house was the actual entrance. The three cats walked up the steps of the porch and found their designated perches by the law of who’s on first.  I noticed the penguin Black & White, always the leader, jumped up on the bench to the left of the door.  Calico Kitty jumped up on the bench, a foot or so down from the Penguin.  The second Black & White Cat, sat to the right of the door anticipating how the door opened, realizing, like how they walked home, they would file in the house because there are rules, and he is The Muscle where Penguin is the Brainiac, and Calico Kitty is the Diva. They all sat with their white-tipped toes folded neatly under them as they surveyed their kingdom.  Still, there was plenty of room for me on that porch – just give me some time and scheming.

Then the door opened, I saw their Momma and I knew, without a doubt I would do everything possible to make this my forever home.  She patted and stroked each kitty, the Penguin she called Andy Cat, the Calico, Diva Gen and the Muscle, Beau Cathuh, what ever she called me, trust me, I’d come running. She had an ongoing conversation, letting them know how happy she was to see them, how delighted she was that they all came back in one piece. They ignored her chatter, in their quest to get inside out of the heat and humidity. No one told them and they probably did not realize cats originated on hot deserts so can tolerate heat but apparently not these ‘hot-house-cats’. Fine, I thought, I will just lay here under the mulberry bush and sleep till the sun goes down and their nocturnal nature drives them back outside to explore the world after dark.

I (Casey) finally make it to Momma's bed. Calico Gen is ignoring me. Jakita, lays between us, protecting me from Gen's huff. Wide eyed stuffed monkey, Ruby did not seem to be bothered by my presence.
I (Casey – bottom right) finally make it  to Momma’s bed. Calico Gen is ignoring me. Jakita is running interference.

And it happened, like clockwork. The outside light came on, the door opened and out came Andy Cat,  Diva Gen, then Beau Cat who will, I know, tell their own stories.

In the meantime, I am going back to the Cat Colony to find Seven.  Wait till he hears how the other half live!

Sir Casey At Bat – Who’s on First?

Is it my turn yet, please, please? I know I am the last kid, I mean cat on the block, I must learn to respect my elders,  but I got so many questions and so much to say, so can I just jump in? Thank you, thank you, now where to begin……

I was not one of the lucky ones, scooped up by the Two Footed as a kitten. No, I lived at the Colony, probably over two years, but I couldn’t swear to you how old I was, just how hungry,  hot and cold I was.  And the truth is George Orwell had it all wrong – Two footed ggggoooodddd, Four footed bbbbaaaadddd!! I know, I lived it. The word catastrophe was coined for cats like me.

Wow, a place to lay my weary head. I was weak, still had gouges of fur missing and hopped around on 3 paws but had visited the Vet a week ago so was on the way to recovery, we thought. It had taken me no time to figure out the comfort of duvets and pillows to rest and recuperate upon.

The day I first saw Momma, I knew I had struck pay dirt.   So listen and learn, listen and learn. And tell this story over and over again to all feral kitty cats so they too can seek out a Momma, like mine.   First things first, I am a short-haired Male Tabby with many shades of gray stripes on my body and legs, and the prominent M on my forehead. My paws are all perfectly tipped with the lightest pastel shade of gray possible.  I also have a thick, bushy charcoal ringed tail which I use to show my emotional state be it fear, uncertainty or happiness – and majestically long white whiskers.

Yes, I am one cool cat dude but let’s be straight, the first time I saw Momma, she did not befriend me for my looks. No, at that point I looked like I had the mange – crusty fur with big tufts missing from the constant marauding Toms, trying to fight to the finish, all in the name of establishing territory.  My ears were tattered and torn, I had huge oozing gashes scattered across my belly, back, paws and head, thanks to the Forest Freak. It was rumored to be part wildcat, part coyote with fox added in to make it more frightful.  Whatever IT was, all of us from the Cat Colony were treated with the same lack of respect.  We had all  been cauterised with the same distinctive branding mark on  the left side of our neck.

Then there were those pesky traps put in place,  it was said, by some simpleton who wanted to catch rabbits.  I got caught not once but twice and worked my way out of them but still had a front paw, then a back paw that I couldn’t use for days. I was what is known as a ‘Hot Mess’. Such is the life of a Cat from the Colony.

Such a joy to watch the touch down. Their very beauty and colors mesmerize.

You may ask what I remember from the Colony – as little as I possibly can, I tell you.  It was a brutal life.  The kitten stage was fun, Baby Mama was fair but busy, so along with my siblings, we climbed trees, chased butterflies, learned to stalk and hunt to survive (and for fun too).  At night we would curl up in a ball with Baby Mama in the den, who would groom us before we would drift off to sleep, feeling protected and content. But soon enough we were half the size of Mama, then the same size, then even bigger than our poor Brood Baby Mama who had a new batch of kitties and the rules changed.  We were out of the den, voted-off –the-island, so to speak. It was time to make our own way in the world.

There are so many tales I could tell you about this existence, so ask me sometime but let’s skip ahead – to the Good Time’s.  Everybody loves a Happy Ending!   But before I go, you want to know.  What happened to you once you were kicked to the curb, so to speak at the Cat Colony?  Well, my steel-gray – almost black and white brother (Momma named him Seven, don’t ask) and I hung out together, hiding in the bushes and forests, communicating in soft meows, making sure there were no enemies in sight before we went out hunting for food  which we shared for survival.  It was a sure bet that every evening the Tom Cats in charge of the dens would come by to practice their Gorilla Warfare tactics on Seven and I, to keep them in tune for  when the Forest Freak came calling, I guess.

Once I no longer had the comfort of a den to hide in, I started noticing three alien cats, two Black and White Toms and a Calico Female, appear each and every day at the Cat Colony.

Posing with my paws tucked in, head up, the camera was kind to me. I look very apprehensive to put my fate in the hands of the Two Footed but the other choices were facing the Forest Freaks or Testosterone Toms.

They all had smooth, shiny, thick fur and sleek bodies. The three of them appeared a bit hoity-toity, when they came to the creek, dipping their paws in the water, then shaking them delicately, laying in the sun on the cement slab walls that encase the Creek, grooming themselves and each other, their tails and ears twitching at any sound that could indicate a threat.  All three of them had a non aggressive relaxed yet curious look about them.  After a couple of hours in the sun they would get up, stretch and leave single file, a Black and White in the front and one at the back, the Calico in between them.  Were they another Colony?

How would I get Membership for their Kitty Club Med? There had to be an answer to this riddle.  I got it, I’d follow them when they left.

And so a plan falls into place and space.

Sir BB as in Black Beauty, Blue Beard or Beastie Boy

Relaxing on the couch at Chez Momma after my initial stay at the Vet Clinic to be rejuvenated and re-hydrated. See the little patches of white, scattered amongst the gleaming black fur. Also note the numerous scratches and patches of fur missing. Life was good, never better. If only....

BB – That would be as in Black Beauty, (just a streak of white underbelly, with a white star under the chin) or Blue Beard (the one-eyed pirate as suggested at the vet clinic), Beastie Boy (around Clem) or Beau Baby in Momma’s arms.  I had history, unfortunately, a lot of it way negative, my energy attracting cat fights that I never won. I was covered in scratches, big gouges ripped from around my mouth, my eyes, all over my skinny black body. I will never forget the night I went home to Momma, crying all the way, with only one eye functioning. Was it my nemesis or Clem or the Forest Freak, whoever it was, got me good, clawing the right eye, to the extent that we had no  idea if I would lose my sight permanently  or get partial sight restored. What could poor Momma do? It was beyond her meager skills of feeding, watering and nurturing.  It was time to take me to meet Dr. C.

You can see, this was one ugly wound even after healing for a week. The perpetrator should be charged with assault, with a deadly weapon (clawed paw, possibly?). It is time for me to start a Kitty Court, all Judges to be black cats with a touch of white patches. All other cats can be Lawyers, Prosecutors, Jury, Victims and the BAD GUYS. Justice for the Abused!
You can see, this was one ugly wound even after healing for a week.

What you should also know about me is I was the LIFO  Cat (Last In First Out) which in inventory refers to the way items are stored.  But I did not know that because, well, I did not know much. One day when Andy had come over to the Cat Colony to lord it over us, I followed him home, meowing loudly, stop, look at me, I am sick, I am hungry, I am so lost and lonely. When Momma opened the door to see what all my caterwauling was about, Andy looked at her with beseeching eyes, Just make it stop’.

Now that was the first time I realized there was something called cat food, poured in a dish, just for you, while the other cats were all given their own bowl. On top of that we all had our own water.  Wow, what a system.  I learned fast. You don’t go putting your nose in someone else’s bowl. You wait till he finishes, then you check out his bowl while the other cat checks out yours, for leftovers.

I bonded quickly with Wonder Boy, I loved his energy, the way the squirrels came right up and took peanuts from his hand.  Momma, well, that took longer, but it was solid once in place.  Then Dr. CK, Dr.WY, Dr.MW and all the staff showered me with love and free call backs over the last two months of my life. Even as much as they cared, I was like Humpty Dumpty with all my catastrophic diseases, impossible to put together again. It was easy to see why I would change my allegiance to  the Two Footed, who bathed me in love, while the Four Footed, ignored or tortured me.

So…it is okay,  Momma, no more tears, Momma, repeat after me ‘It is OK’. I did what you told me to, leaping from your arms to that fluffy blue cloud that catapulted me to RIP Daddy’s warm embrace.

Look at my Launching Pad, the blue cloud, floating along in an inexplicably awesome universe lit by the sun in the day, the moon and the stars at night.
My Launching Pad, the blue cloud, floating along in an inexplicably awesome universe lit by the sun in the day, the moon and the stars at night.

I saw you, Momma, when you arrived home with an empty cage.  Immediately, the love of my life, Jakita ran over, confused. She needed an answer. What happened to BB? And Sweet Gen (who would sniff my nose, to show me I was acceptable in her sight), joined them, communicating in soft meows, ‘Oh wow, Momma, I’ll be good, just please don’t take me away.’  I saw as your tears dripped on their heads as you consoled them.

Just remember, I had three months of food, whenever I wanted it.  I had three months of belonging to a family which meant three months of love.  If I was annoying because I  meowed so loudly and long, I  am sorry.  I know I even deafened myself  by mostly shouting out anguishing wails with volume set to full tilt. For that  I apologize. It was not respectful of the Zen like ambience that turns a home into a paradise. Now I know, you should only hear the flutter of butterflies, the chirps of satisfied birds  and the tinkling bells ring when angels earn their wings. As well, my biggest crime, I drove off Clem, who will tell his own story, I get it.

In the end, I was loved by you.
In the end, I was loved by you.

If I could change anything in my past life, my relationship with Clem would be a re-do. I would make him love me, just like the you, the Two Footed did.

So………..I was not meant for a long time, but in that three months, well you, Wonder Boy, the Vets, especially Dr C. and the Clinic Staff, you all made it a purr-fect time…  And in the end Momma, in the end I was loved by you.
